The medical consultant of the Consumers' Union treats the subject handled by Montague (on Lippincott's list) in a more thorough, more authoritative and better organized way. He takes up first the psychological as well as the physiological factors, then goes on to debunk various theories of auto-intoxication, alkalizing, sports, etc. On to specifics such as laxatives, with the components of each and its accompanying evils, and diet, with precise information as to what is helpful and what harmful. He closes with the more serious phases -- colitis, spastic constipation, hemorrhoids, and so on. He relies on medical reports of various scientific investigations rather than on theory for his conclusions. A sound book for the layman.
