A Norwegian land surveyor returns to Patagonia, pampas region of the Argentine, now slowly evolving from primitive wilderness to exploited territory, as adventurers and sharpers rush in. In simple, distinctive, somewhat aesthetic style, the author writes of the lonely interior, of the corrupt coast town, of old pioneers and gauchos, of customs and country. Not a travel book -- not an adventure book. Can't see a wide appeal, in spite of the charm of the manner.
