The spot where modern America was born"" and the trials of its founders through plague and dissension and Indian attack, from the first landing in 1607 to the removal of Virginia's capital to Williamsburg in 1698. John Smith's rescue by Pocahontas is mentioned but not overemphasized (and ""there were those who did not believe this story Smith told of his rescue""); highlighted are the early ""starvation time,"" Rolfe's introduction of tobacco, formation of the General Assembly and subsequent rebellions against English governors, and the settlement's deliverance from massacre by an Indian boy who warned his English master of Opechancanough's planned attack. It's only a sketch next to the American Heritage Jamestown: First English Colony, but it leads its (younger) class in style, scope and perspective.
