WHEN CLAY SINGS

Silhouetted against ""browns and tans the shade of desert earth, black and white shiny as stones polished by the water in high mountain streams,"" more of the prehistoric motifs drawn by Indian artists Before You Came This Way (1969). This time the artifacts are pottery shards found by Indian children at play, and the boldly dramatic designs -- wrestling bears, crouching monsters, leaping fish -- inspire hushed speculation (honed to near poetry) about their creators for ""every piece of clay is a piece of someone's life."" In turn, the clay ""has its own small voice and sings in its own way"" -- quietly, perfectly in tune.
