Collin Grant's guilt brings him to the midwest town of Holloway to learn more about Larry Noland who had been killed in Korea and, through the Noland family, the priests and the friends, he finds the answers -- only to have them turned back on him. Collin is not a Catholic and the arguments and issues within the family lead him to tell Liz just how her brother died. For Larry had been trying to convert Collin who, in turn, had questioned Larry's faith, and, now he knows that Larry had been going into the priesthood, he has further to think about. When he learns what happened during the year after Larry graduated and before he enlisted, he is armed with his proof, but it is Father Dalquin who reverses the conclusion and Larry's sinning has its purpose in saving Collin. The controversy between the Catholic and the non-Catholic is aired in all its issues with the emphasis on sin in its many forms and readers in the faith will follow its course knowledgeably while others will find a certain interest in the complexity of the clashes, and still others may find it all too much for them.
