Did you know: that Hiawatha, far from the words of legend, was actually the founder of the highly democratic Iroquois Confederacy; that the Pueblo religion intigated the peaceful tribe's massive rebellion against the Spanish; that the biggest single victory scored against the army was not at ""Little Big Horn"" but during George Washington's administration when Little Turtle defeated General Arthur St. Clair? Defeated in turn by ""Mad Anthony"", Little Turtle was accorded full military honors at his funeral and buried at Fort Wayne. Furthermore, a half-breed, illiterate, uneducated, crippled, crippled Cherokee was ""the only person in the entire history of the world to invent, completely by himself an alphabet or syllabary""; a young Comanche rescued a sacrificial maiden and was subsequently awarded a medal from Mrs. White's Boarding School in Washington. These are some of the little-known facts about an often forgotten race. Mr. Porter's attempt to reveal the Indian mystique is unfortunately based at times on speculation, but he manages to delve into an ironically unclaimed territory-successfully undermining the gilded facade of Hollywood's ""Cowboys and Injuns.
