OUT OF DOORS IN AUTUMN

Another (the third) in an excellent nature series. Hylander does not talk down to young nature enthusiasts, but rather pulls them up to him -- a welcome change after some of the nature books. Any interested -- and not too informed -- adult will find these books invaluable. First of all, he teaches one to use eyes to best advantage; then he shows basic principles by which one recognizes clues to identification, whether of flowers or trees or birds or what have you. Finally, he brings together what he wants to tell about Autumn and nature's changes, under the headings of flowers, birds of prey, plant travels, preparations for winter's onset. Under this final classification comes fascinating information about what happens to annuals, biennials, pere, bulb and rm plants, evergreens and deciduous trees, animals that hibernate and animals that migrate, and so on. Good illustrations make this a field guide as well as a book for fireside reading.
