TOURNAMENT FORWARD

A smart-aleck showoff, Neil could play basketball but he didn't do so well as a fellow-student. Nor did he endear himself to the faculty -- or a lot of other people- by putting Limburger cheese in the airconditioning system or other appealing exploits. Suspended and then stubbornly refusing to come back, no mother to help him and a father on familiar terms with the bottle, Neil was fast becoming a bad citizen. After missing a few games, and after a lot of reasonable talk from the coach, Neil took the chip from his shoulder, played basketball again and felt better all around. Character uplift from the sports angle never hurts, sometimes helps.
