ALL-CONFERENCE

Seems a bit out of season for a football story, but by the time publication date rolls around the beginning of the training season will be upon us. Good vigorous stuff for football fans, better on the sports side than on the social significance which is there (as in Tunis) but doesn't quite come off. Barry Shane, fresh out of an exclusive eastern prep school, is playing haflback for Michigan, and learns that a swelled head doesn't fit a football helmet and that foreigners can be good guys. Detailed play-by-play reporting will hold the readers' attention, while the conversion leaves them untouched. The principals are live figures on the field and lay figures elsewhere.
