The average juvenile adventure tale of the sea (see above) pales into mediocrity when compared with a lusty tale of the intrepid Hornblower -- now a Commodore -- bluff, rugged, tender-hearted. This fourth volume in the series should take younger readers back to the earlier volumes. Forester spins a good yarn; his historical background is unimpeachable (this time it is the Napoleonic wars, and the ill-timed attack on Russia).
