KIRKUS REVIEW

A book for those interested in out-of-the-way places, with hardships, dangers, obstacles taken in their stride, based on fifteen years of traveling, on one expedition after another, -- Chinese Turkestan, Ethiopia, Assam, Chinese Tibet, the Galapagos, Celebes, Nepal, Upper Burma, etc. The emphasis is on the places visited rather than on the author himself. Unhampered by tradition-dictated responses to these fairly uncharted places, he is responsive and enthusiastic, and tells of his journeyings and the people he met with concentrated observation and fresh judgment.
