Densely factual history framed in near-Biblical syntax (""There was in the House of Commons a certain member named Sir John Eliot"") is accompanied by set piece illustrations which emphasize the grandeur of it all. The text is reliable, the pictures eye-catching; the only question is whether children old enough to understand the former will still need (or want) a storybook format. Like The Norman Conquest and the Spanish Armada, this does have the advantage of presenting a discrete segment of English history in an unforbidding manner.
