This book is much more than its title might suggest. It is not just another look about The Globe and its arrangements, but a short study of the drama and theatre in England up to and including Shakespeare's time. From puppet shows to strolling layers and street corner pageants, Mr. Hodges shows the traditional entertainments, how they borrowed from each other and the conventions they shared. His illustrations are as important to the book as the short text. Aside from the fact that they are well drawn, they are in full color which lends active drama to the visualization of cheaters and players as they must have been. The organization and development of Elizabethan society and details of the gadgetry of theatre production are bonus extras in a book that is both brief and beautiful.
