Del Smith's had a mental block on tackling ever since he broke his collarbone in ninth grade. He's also haunted (having moved to Riverville for his senior year) by the confusion that he's Hal Smith, his prize-winning husky cousin. Sympathetic coach Crandon tells him not to worry but the head coach, Blood-and-Thunder Durkheuser, chews Del out for his deadend defense in the first game. You-know-who overhears the two coaches argue over criticizing players in front of their teammates; Crandon puts his job at stake, Durkheuser pulls--out. Del overcomes his shoulder shivers and softens up a fast-talking teammate with the old one-two and solid work on the field--""as plain Del Smith."" Hyphen-happy like we-know-who, and only so-so.
