with true events, some have imaginary central characters. Toc, the virtues of the goods and the vices of the bads are often so plainly cutlined as to make the tales irritatingly unrealistic. But on the whele there is the healthy vim and drive, of the march of civilization and the evidence of diligent research. The editors' introductions to each book place the stores in their historical perspective.
