KIRKUS REVIEW

Somewhat young for this age group; though the characters are eleven and up, the plots seems superficial and stereotyped. Perhaps we should grade it down to the 8 to 11 group...The setting is west Texas, and a ranch once famous for white faced beef animals, but running down rapidly under the necessary economies of the widowed mother, left alone with an old father and three youngsters. Phil, 17 when the story opens, is putting his hopes on a young Hereford steer, which he is grooming for a 4-H contest. Glenn and Judy, in a summer that doesn't work out as they hoped, learn to make their contribution, and success is attained through hard work -- and a bit of luck.
