One of the basic source books of western history, this exciting and authentic account of an officer's experiences on the plains in the Indian Wars of 1864-1865 was first published in a limited edition in 1911, after the author's death. Long available only in the rare book rooms of libraries, it is here reprinted in its entirety with a foreword and notes by Clyde C. Walton. In its way a companion volume to Grinnell's Fighting Cheyennes as one of the two contemporary sources (although the Grinnell defends the Indian point of view, while this is the soldier's), it remains a minor classic and is now available again, at a reasonable price as well.
