A summer jaunt to Harry's farm proves well worth it, despite the many twists, false starts, dead ends, wrong turns, and distractions that delay the trip. The family—seen leaping for joy when they are on the right route at last—arrives at Harry's just in time for sunset, fireflies, and an outdoor dinner cooked by Harry. After stories and songs under the stars, the family sacks out in Harry's old beater cars—a delightful alternative to sleeping bags. The next morning Harry greets them with piles of pancakes to fortify them for the trip home. In her first book, Hedlund perfectly captures the pleasures and pitfalls that accompany an exodus from a sweltering city, with full-page illustrations that often give way to panels hinting at, rather than spelling out, some of summer's embellishments: grills, geraniums, catsup, mustard, corn on the cob, drinks with melting ice. Occasional text within the pictures—a road sign, instructions taped on the front door—leads readers further into this midsummer's night adventure, and add fun for those just learning to pick out printed words.
