A novel of the ""hollers"" and the hills charts the wild storm that broods and breaks over the Ruk family as 17 year old Griff discovers that his people are often strangers to him. His father, Big, turns to ""juggin"" when things get too much for him; his mother's complaints are a small part of her love for all her children; his sister Flor runs away with a city pants and returns in disgrace; and his brother Random, although he joins in the family farming more vigorously than in the past, also hunts with a more deadly purpose. And Griff, whose love has always been for Gwen, finds romance in the Wild Girl and is ready to protect her when his premonition about Random proves to be all too true. Random's last killing and his capture clear up two other murders and give his family a new unity and understanding. The plain talk of plain people reflects the harshness of the land and the life it affords and may offend if offense is looked for.
