KIRKUS REVIEW

The colorful and turbulent history of the revolutionary secret societies of China ably told. Real forces behind the 1911 Revolution which made China a republic, powerful in the rise of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, part of Chiang Kai-shek's regime, the Secret Societies reveal only a hint of their views for the future and their opposition to the present Nationalist Government and Communist fight. This has considerable background material on the philosophic origins of the societies, and their numerous -- and largely unsuccessful minor revolts, and the material gives a glimpse of Chinese ideology. If for a somewhat limited audience, this is however extremely readable.
