ONE PENNY BLACK: The Story of Stamp Collecting

The One Penny Black was issued in 1840 in England; it was the first true postage stamp and it was immensely popular. A year later a young lady began saving stamps to paper her room with, and in a little While stamp collecting also became immensely popular and eventually big business. This iS an album of stamp anecdotes about eccentric collectors, extraordinary finds and losses, valuable errors and ruinous hoaxes, arranged in a history of the printing of stamps, and of the methods of collecting. There are innumerable devoted philatelists, and probably almost as many people who agree with the warning of the 1860's that stamps are ""bits of defaced printing, totally worthless;"" this is an entertaining book for those on either side.
