After strolling through the zoo, Dudley sat down with his crayons and scrawled strange creatures which only vaguely resembled those he had seen. The small boy gazed on with delight as the crayoned menagerie stepped from the pages-- an eight legged fellow, a one-eyed tiger, a mouse-sized elephant, an elephant-sized mouse, a four legged turkey and a flopping mackerel. After being scolded by his unimaginative mother, Dudley sells his collection to a wealthy old man who liked to feed popcorn to the pigeons. The author's own crayoned creations are not too unusual, but do embody a simplicity in interpretation and design with which the very young should find identification.
