AMERICAN CLOCKS AND CLOCKMAKERS

The author of Primer for Antique Collectors and First Reader for Antique Collectors here specializes in a companion volume on American clocks. A not-too-distant search for some conclusive information on brass works vs wooden works proved to me that just such a book as this is needed (and even this is not the final answer). With an introductory section tracing the history of timepieces, the author goes on to clocks, first used and later produced in the colonies -- their sources (Dutch, Swedish, French, English) the progress up from early bracket clocks, 30-hour brass movements, to wag-on-the-wall, grandfather clocks, banjo type clocks, wall clocks, mantle clocks, and so on. He discusses the original confusion of brass vs wooden works- and the sources. The clockmakers and their claims:- Willard, Terry, Heman, Clark, Silas Hoadley, Chauncey Jerome, Seth Thomas -- and, in an appendix, as nearly as possible a complete list of authentic manufacturers of American clocks.
