THE ARTIST IN AMERICA

A series of essays and articles on 24 contemporary American artists in the field of graphic arts and printmakers. The list covers a wide range, some well-known, some in the making:- John Marin, Adolf Dehn, Wanda Gag, Rockwell Kent, Alfred Stieglitz, Thomas Hart Benton, Frederico Castellon are a few of them. Each section takes up one artist, and is a combination of biographical sketch, personality sketch and appreciation of the contribution of that individual to the field of art. The author seems to have known his subjects personality; he writes intimately and with warm sympathy and appreciation; on the score of their artistic contribution he is more objectively critical. Even for the uninitiate, this makes good reading; stimulating and informative for those in the know. Fully illustrated, with portraits and reproductions of prints. The author is Curator of Prints, Philadelphia Museum of Art.
