An amazing book, for it has a brittle clarity, a beauty, an occasional obliqueness that does not obscure -- that recalls The Sun Also as no other imitator (though so original a work as this is not imitative) has done. It is a story of a brother and sister, linked in a way that seems almost supernatural, the brother unable to achieve without her, the sister driven by a recurrent duality of personality over which she has no apparent control. The story is set in the Tyrol -- and told by a visitor in the castle household, who has himself launched forth on an incomprehensible love affair. An eerie story, absorbingly interesting and brilliantly done. A book -- and an author -- to watch.
