KIRKUS REVIEW

his is certainly one of the most fascinatingly detailed accounts of the victories, defeats, maneuvers and intrigues of South America's liberation from Spain available to the English speaking/reading public. San Martin and Bolivar, of course, Miranda, O'Higgins, and all the other leaders, dedicated republicans and idealistic dictators, march their armies of mestizos and Indians across these pages, fighting one spectacular battles of a revolution which, as the author points out, is yet to be won. The story comes alive in Mr. Beals' quick but always evocative writing.
