THE STONES AWAKE by Carleton Beals

THE STONES AWAKE

By

Publisher: Lippincott

Against a panorama of the changing political scene from the Mexico of Porfirio Diaz to the present day is portrayed the life and times of Esperanza, orphaned and ignorant, who through her loves and vicissitudes comes to understand Mexico's plight and problems and eventually returns to the small village to train young people in preparation for their future. The double crossing of church and state, the ignorance of the peasants and their so slow growth toward knowledge make this a studious picture with every possible element worked into the story. For readers seriously interested in Mexico, but not an absorbing enough story in itself to appeal to those to whom Mexico means nothing.
