Orthomolecular psychiatry has gotten a lot of attention lately (see H. L. Newbold, Mega-Nutrients for Your Nerves, p. 898; J. Daniel Palm, Diet Away Your Stress, Tension and Anxiety, p. 1273). This latest contribution is longer on claims than proofs. ""Every study of patients"" in conventional psychotherapy ""has shown about 60 percent of them to be victims of hypoglycemia"" (not one study is cited by name); the schizophrenias are syndromes of metabolic abnormalities. There are reams of undocumented case histories and dozens of fulminations against the ""obstructionist"" efforts of orthodox shrinks--""talk-therapists,' as Fredericks contemptuously calls them. These shrill tactics will do no harm among the faithful, but should repel the more responsible audience that the material deserves.
