A little workout at the barre for aspiring dancers who want to learn the terminology, recap the plot of Giselle and learn the importance of the cardinal rule--daily practice is essential--by agonizing along with Ellen as she tries to reconcile her professional aspirations with her talents for art and friendship. Ellen is a sympathetic model pupil as she tries to juggle her full schedule until a fortuitous sprained ankle helps her accept losing the big competition to a more dedicated girl. Ironically this pro-ballet scenario has the unintended effect of making serious-minded dancers seem impossibly fanatic. And in fictional terms it never even gets up on pointe.
