Family therapists Anderson and Stewart talk to 87 single women over 40 -- some divorced, some never married, some widowed, none scientifically selected -- in order to demonstrate that the state of being a single woman at midlife is no reason to crawl into a hole and die. Those interviewed talk earnestly about the fulfillments and disappointments, the hopes and anxieties associated with career, education, motherhood, sex, love, and just about everything else. The message is a clear one: that each of these women is a self unto herself and that it's ridiculous to consider the state of not being married as a disease or a handicap.
