Octavia Grey, 20 and already a ""spinster,"" falls in love with her beautiful cousin Julia's fiancÉ, Sir Tristram Deanbridge, thoughtful, handsome possessor of a vast estate; meanwhile, rich Julia falls in love with Octavia's father's political speechwriter, a red-haired, red-rhetorical apparent pauper, which leads her father to banish her to wild and barren Cornwall, where Octavia and a host of quirky nobleman and ladies follow. Soon noblepeople and local ""tax-law"" smugglers, with heroic Octavia at their head, are plotting to outwit the local customs agents; towers, secret passages and caves enter in, and so does Sir Tristram's reappraisal of the relative merits of Octavia and Julia. Romantic fortunes are reversed; all ends pleasantly, satisfyingly, and more or less convincingly in the best of the Regency romance tradition.
