DARK INHERITANCE

Bequeathed, or just borrowed from all the others almost like it, and written in third-hand cliche, this finds Susannah Button in Cornwall (where else) as governess (what else) in the divided household of Sir Tristan where she falls in love with his son Mark. He warns her away (so does the dead rat in her bed) and for a time she serves as companion to his aunt in Venice, then returns to England hoping to marry Mark until she is told that she's his ""half-sister in bastardy."" Marrying, briefly, a distinguished artist who turns out to be addicted to laudanum, she finally is reprieved. When it's all so familiar--except for two plot deviations--how can it be so unrememberable?
