THE PAPER CAPER

This second two-dimensional mystery about twins Lynn and Victoria (the first was Safe as the Grave, 1979) opens with klutzy levity as a disgruntled Lynn makes a spectacle of the family laundry in an episode designed to demonstrate her incorrigible charm. Nor does it acquire style as Lynn and Victoria go off to Uncle Steve and Aunt Camelia for the summer, the computer program Uncle Steve has designed for the local newspaper is stolen, and Lynn alone figures out who took it and why. Unlike the Civil War jewels of the first book, the subject of this mystery--which gives Lynn a chance to toss around a few new terms and show off to her friends on the computer keyboard--gives the story a note of up-to-date novelty. Marginal.
