A unique biographical novel, so convincing in subject matter and presentation that one well-known sportsman swallowed it, bait, hook and sinker, as autobiography, and expressed the opinion that all enthusiasts of fishing and gunning would consider it their meat. My advice is -- soft pedal the fact that it is written by a woman; these he-men of the sporting world don't like female interference in what they consider their private domain....But don't ignore its wider market, for any and all who like the out-of-doors and who are interested in skillful characterization. It purports to be the story of a man, first a sportsman, second a husband and father and teacher. And almost every page has caught the infection of an abiding love of woods and streams and sport. The setting is the South of forty years ago.
