KIRKUS REVIEW

Novelist Gordon's approach is in no way a manual with lists and categories. Here is a tour of master craftsmen from Sophocles to Hemingway pointing to this, steering away from that. She draws on the comments of many critics -- Maritain, N. G. Collingwood, Howard Mumford Jones, Van Wyck Brooks. Because the goal of the author and the reader is the same -- the perception of life as it really is, this unacademic, informal study of the makeup of the novel, directed toward that end, is well worth the reading.
