WHEN OUR TOWN WAS YOUNG

The Springfield Plan (see P. 255) provided a record of one community project. Here is a record of another. Both are indications that communities can be awakened to their own vital needs and interests. This book was a major school project -- and became a community project. Boys and girls of today dug into the records of their town's past, organized the material, and put it into form for others to read. Naturally, the local interest is keedest -- for here in anecdote, bits of history, of biography, geography in the making, records, and so forth are ""stories of North Salem's yesterdays"". But an analysis of the skeleton of the plan shows that it provides a basic skeleton plan for similar studies anywhere:- the founding of the town -- the earliest pioneers -- the Indians -- the early life -- farms -- industries -- roads -- schools -- churches -- and so forth. Could history or geography find any medium to make ti more vital than this uncovering of what history and geography mean in terms of familiar surroundings.
