WHEN I LIVED IN SALEM (1822-1866)

A diary now published for the first time. The author has a delightful style and her reflections on the present (mid 19th century) and the past make amusing and quaint reading today. Gentle -- quiet -- delicately flavored, an ideal gift for an elderly relatives. There are stories of sea captains, of Salem kitchens, of the delight of veal and fried applies, of Sunday in Salem. There are amusing anecdotes of Salem people. One wishes she were not so unfailingly the ""lady"", but since these reflections were to be read aloud to younger relatives, intimate thoughts had no place in them in these days. Several chapters of this appeared in the Atlantic, and the book will doubtless take a place in the records of New England, though we can't agree that the sale should be comparable to The Country Kitchen.
