The author writes of her own part of the country, the iron-ore region of northern Michigan. Here young Inga is brought up by her Cornish father and her Finnish mother, who is an excellent cook. The girl is keen to go to Art School so she tries to raise money by making and selling pasties, but her hard-earned gains go instead towards paying for an operation on her father's eyes. The book holds much else, Finnish customs, Fairs, skiing, a Collie, and so forth.
