PENNY GOES TO CAMP

Pub Date: July 28th, 1948
Publisher: Morrow

The third in a series about two adopted boys, Peter who is now 10 and Penny who is 8. After a rather unfortunate start, when camp is viewed as an unhappy necessity, forced on the boys (who want another summer at the seashore) because the parents are going to Europe, this develops into a rather commonplace story about minor adventures and misadventures at the camp. There is place for a good first camping book, but this doesn't measure up to expectations. The boys were convinced- camp turned out to be lots of fun- but neither the constructive aspects nor the psychological ones seem very convincing to this reader. And a good chance was missed to strengthen the boys' sense of security in giving them a voice in the decision. Publication date makes it late for the camping crowd.
