They take in Orphans of the storm, Neddie and Susan Byrd and their mother, and rescue a cardinal (bird) from the roof; the electricity goes off, but they make popcorn in the fireplace, as well as a snowman outdoors; and chapter to chapter leads from one resourceful, homemade activity to another which Carolyn Haywood's readers will again find cheerful. The story as well as the vocabulary is comfortable and there is no thaw in this market.
