WILD FOLK IN THE WOODS

Third in a series of books by the same author, the first of which Weejack in the Woods, dealt with North American prairie animals, and the second, Wild Folk at the Pond is self explanatory in title. Wild Folk in the Woods is a smattering of information, personalized and narrative in style, about a few birds, beasts and insects the continent over- roughly sixteen different kinds of animals in all. The author's method is to take, for example, Mowitch, a blacktail buck as he walks somewhere along the Pacific Coast, describe his looks, habits, habitat, mate, young, yearly routine and some of his relations with other flora and fauna. The same is done with Chip chipmunk, Fluff the screech owl, Samia the cecropia and so forth. A pleasant little book for the first surface scrapings of nature study, but the young will soon want to know about bears, elk, snakes and moose- here missing.
