THE FACE OF JUSTICE by Caryl Chessman

THE FACE OF JUSTICE

By

Pub Date: Sept. 20th, 1957
Publisher: Prentice-Hall

The secret record of Chessman's nine-year survival under a death sentence and his continuing battle against capital punishment. Written at night, cunningly hidden by day from searching prison guards, smuggled out and spirited off from San Quentin to the publisher, this is the documentation of his many courtroom battles in his quest for a new trial, and of what it felt like to be California's Red Light Bandit under sentence of death. The earlier books, Cell 2455, Death Row and Trial by Ordeal have found a receptive market,- condemnatory, curious, convinced, as he underscores the right of every person- even from twilit death row- to due process of law. Like most litigants, Chessman tends to reveal only his side of every story. Nonetheless, he presented enough for that side to persuade the U.S. Supreme Court to order yet another hearing in the lower courts. The market as before.
