EAGLES

A colorful but superficial entry in the new Endangered! series. Horton (Ancient Greeks, 1992, not reviewed) discusses eight of fifty species, usually providing a few brief paragraphs, two full-color photographs, and a range map for each bird. The text and maps are so general they are essentially useless: The statement, ``The bald eagle lives only in North America and can be found in most parts of the continent,'' is accompanied by a map showing them in all parts of the US except for a small area of Texas. From that presentation, most readers will have a hard time grasping why eagles are endangered. Neither the discussion nor photos offer detail to clarify how species differ or why certain eagles were selected for inclusion; Horton leaves out scientific names and comprehensive size information, and the photos do not indicate scale.
