NOW YOU KNOW YOUR ABCS

(Or Do You?)

by Caspar Salmon ; illustrated by Matt Hunt

In a twist on the traditional ABC book, Salmon and Hunt lead readers on a goofy romp.

The unseen narrator of this “handy new book” offers to help youngsters learn the alphabet. “A is for…apple. Say it with me!” But don’t be fooled by the primary-colored illustrations or straightforward start—suddenly, “D is for…DANGER!” A mischievous wolf pulls readers into an interactive alphabet adventure. From A to Z, youngsters must evade the wolf on a chase that takes them to France, to a treehouse, on a magic carpet ride, and beyond. Salmon models his work after typical ABC books, infusing his entries with plenty of absurd fun: “K is for…KEY! Which doesn’t help you, because you don’t have one.” Like the creators’ How To Count to ONE (2022), a deceivingly simple concept book transforms into a hilarious, slightly nonsensical affair that will get young readers thinking creatively about the alphabet. The second-person text is immersive and engaging, while Hunt’s bright illustrations are well laid out, packed with curious details and a stalking wolf. What’s more, many of the ABC words highlight each letter’s phoneme appropriately and give opportunities for youngsters to listen out for letter sounds. Tons of opportunities for read-aloud flair abound here; pick this one up if you’re looking for belly laughs with preschoolers, kindergarteners, or listeners already well versed in their ABCs.

An engaging refresh of a traditional concept book that brings the silliness without sacrificing critical thinking.
