ADVENTURES OF THE GODS

A good idea but dully executed. It is quite a problem to write the Greek myths down to this primary level and there is some question as to whether any attempt can be simple enough and leave some pith to the stories themselves. This attempt succeeds in being confusing and unsatisfactory as story material as well as authentic myths. The author falls to establish the unreal nature of the material and establishes a factual, casual air which is unsettling to any sense of historical perspective a child may be achieving. A world of vicious, jealous, unreliable supermen needs more than the hoary aura to make it recommended reading for the very young. There may be a place for a book of myths to supplant A Wonder Book and Tanglewood Tales but this book doesn't do it.
