This is the life story of the late Dr. Peter Marshall, who was the pastor of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church of Washington (the Lincoln Church) and Chaplain of the United States Senate. Dr. Marshall's untimely death at 46 robbed Washington and the nation of one of our most colorful and dynamic religious leaders. So great was the interest in the man and his message that a volume of his sermons published under the title of Mr. Jones -- Meet the Master was for months on the list of best sellers. His widow has given us a graphic and deeply personal account of her husband's life and a pen portrait of his flaming personality. Some will think the account too personal, too greatly concerned with the intimacies of their life together. However, the wife apparently absorbed something of her husband's gift for pictorial writing, for she certainly makes Peter Marshall come alive not only as her adored husband, but as a uniquely endowed man of God. She pictures his early life in Scotland where he worked as a factory hand, his determination to enter the ministry, his emigration to the United States, his struggle to secure an education, his instantaneous and sensational success as a preacher in Atlanta and for ten years in the prominent New York Avenue Church in Washington. Included, of course, is his service as Chaplain to the Senate where his pithy and pungent prayers made the Senate and the nation sit up and take notice. Included in the volume are selected sermons and prayers, and Mrs. Marshall gives a vivid description of his conception of the ministry and the way he prepared his sermons.
