THE HELEN KELLER STORY

Although there is no dearth of biographies of Helen Keller, this account by Catherine Owen Peare, who has written an extensive list of biographies, gives here an unusually complete account of Helen Keller's progress in her fight against deafness, dumbness and blindness. Step by step she reveals how Anne Sullivan, dedicated to her young pupil, redeemed the unusually intelligent Helen Keller from the limbo to which a childhood disease had consigned her. The various painful methods of teaching are summarized in full here and the phenomenal careers of both women are recounted in revealing detail. Written with sensitivity, this biography does credit to its subject and goes far in giving a technical understanding of how a six-year-old child, given up by her community as a defective, could mature into an educated and internationally celebrated ambassador of good will.
