CHARLES DICKENS: His Life

Dickens' life might well have provided the outline for one of his novels, and unfortunately Catherine Owens Peare has done little more than present it in its outline. The curious factors of warmth, privation, precariousness and victory manage to come through, and are in themselves fascinating, particularly as they find their reflection in the context of his writings. But more than this could have been done, in exploring the man beneath the surface, the drama behind the events. In this she has failed, and though she writes with fidelity, she lacks spark.
