A good biographer (see report on Henry Wodsworth Longfellow: His Life in this issue) turns to adventure with a tough, healthy story of the Texas Rangers. A smooth narrative with the proper trials, crises and outcome, tells of fourteen year old Chett Roberts' journey with Captain George Arrington's company to discover the watering grounds used by Indians who made the long trip from New Mexico to raid Panhandle settlers. On the arduous trek Chett must overcome the jibes of the older men, prove his own courage -- and finally find the Indians' main trail-before he's made a Ranger. Trite but trustworthy.
