In a village at the southern tip of South Africa (settled 200 years ago by ""Filipino fishermen, European sailors, and freed slaves from Malaya and Java""), a boy who hopes to grow up to be a fisherman stows away on his uncle's boat--luckily, as it turns out, since it is he who realizes that one of the fishermen has been washed overboard and needs help. The competently written story serves well as a frame for Stock's sympathetic portrait of this unusual community. Her skillful pencil and watercolor illustrations are exceptional in evoking the beauty of the harbor, the strong character and busy activity of the people. A good contribution to international understanding.
